You might still need an air purifier with a HVAC (air conditioning) system

In an ideal world, your building HVAC system has a ‘fresh air’ system with regularly replaced HEPA filters. Just bear in mind that particles may need to travel a long way through the ducts before clean air can be redistributed throughout the building. As viral particles can live in the air for up to three hours (CDC), building occupants can benefit when air purification happens fasters and is more localised.

If your HVAC system has standard filters or simply recirculates the air, it will not be as efficient and may be expensive to upgrade. Poor indoor air quality is not just about viruses, it can lead to a whole load of health issues that affected us long before COVID and will continue to affect us for a long time after.

Enter the Blast! This powerful air purifier has both a HEPA and Carbon filter which not only helps with mitigating viral spread indoors, it will also reduce particles and gases from both indoors and outdoors sources.

Air purifiers can still work effectively with the windows open

High CO2 is increasingly used as a yardstick to measure the risk of viral transmission indoors but it can also seriously impact productivity. Only fresh air will reduce CO2 levels in occupied rooms, but you may have concerns about outdoor pollution which can also cause serious long-term health risks. Outdoor pollutants will find its way indoors even with the windows closed. We tested our purifiers with the windows open and the good news is that it still effectively removes particles, but at around 30% reduced capacity. So open the window and crank up the air purifier when CO2 levels are high.

Is your building in an area with fumes from traffic or wood-smoke?

HEPA filters are a powerhouse for capturing particles from traffic and wood-smoke but it doesn’t work on fumes or gases from these contaminants. For this, you will need a carbon filter which most HVAC systems don’t have so if you are worried about traffic fumes, be sure to look at a powerful air purifier with a carbon filter like the Blast.

Our video below shows how much smoke it can clear in under 3 minutes.

SCHOOLS
Make your classrooms a safer and healthier teaching and learning environment

  • Clear improvement in standardised scores

  • Reduction in class absences for teachers and pupils

  • Better concentration levels

  • Improvement in exam results

  • Reducing outdoor pollutants which  finds its way indoors

Use our calculator to work out what Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) you need for your classroom size. Remember that most people will run it on low due to noise so find out the CADR setting on low. Read our cost comparison for a school with 7 classrooms.

Real results of how an an air purifier made a difference in schools

  • In 2015, a big leak at a natural gas facility in the US resulted in the company paying for air filters in every classroom, office and common area in ALL schools within a five mile radius. After 4 months, Math scores went up by 0.20 and English scores by 0.18 standard deviations. These same results could be achieved by cutting class sizes by 1/3rd

  • London School of Economics studied university students’ test performance relative to air pollution levels on the day of the test alone. Results showed that taking a test in a filtered rather than unfiltered room would raise test scores by 0.09 standard deviations

  • Researchers gave 35 healthy Shanghai students real or fake air purifiers and tracked several health markers for two days. They found that after 48 hours, the students had significantly lower inflammation in their blood vessels. They also had lower blood coagulation (a marker of blood clotting) and less constricted blood veins

  • In 2018, Goose Green became the first state school in London to install air purifiers in every classroom. They have anecdotal evidence of improvements in asthma symptoms and coughing fits

  • 3 schools in Camden had high PM levels, some up to 40 times greater than WHO levels. Air purifiers were installed in all classrooms. Since installation, staff noticed a decrease in sick absence amongst both children and teachers

  • A team of researchers analysed air pollution of more than 100,000 stock traders in Germany from 2003 to 2015. They found that a 12 microgram increase in PM10 reduced investors' propensity to trade by nearly 10 percent! This isn't much when you consider that in any given day, the PM10 rate can fluctuate by 0-40 micrograms. Read more...

An Air Purifier can help you when masks can't be worn

When considering germs and viruses, especially the recent spread of COVID-19, masks are invaluable in reducing the risk of spreading and should be worn at all times by staff and patients. However, this is not always possible when being treated, especially in dentist surgeries. This is where the Blast comes in!

Air purifiers with HEPA filters are great at capturing nanoparticles removing 99.9% of viruses from the air. Therefore, an air purifier is essential for the key moments when a mask may have to be removed.

If you have windowless consulting rooms, use an air purifier

Ventilation is the only solution to reducing CO2 levels in occupied offices, but if you are in a windowless room, monitor your office CO2 levels and take breaks when levels get above 800 or open the door. High CO2 levels are used as an indicator for indoor viral transmissions so run an air purifier in tandem with your HVAC system to maximise the number of air changes per hour in your space. If your HVAC system is a recirculating, make sure you get a powerful air purifier.

Airbon is the UK distributor of the Smart Air Filters, a social enterprise and certified B Corp. Smart Air reinvests 100% of profits into helping people protect themselves from the harms of air pollution. The Sqair and Blast purifiers gives you far more clean air at a fraction of the cost of other purifiers.

How did they do this? They cut out the fancy marketing gimmicks such as ionisers and photocatalytic filters that science shows can actually make your air worse. Smart Air purifiers are designed for performance and are data-backed. They are excellent at one thing: cleaning air. And it does that better than its competition.
